Synopsis:
Noted cultural historian and Columbia University professor Jeremy Dauber reveals the
startling origins of horror in American culture and discusses its manifestations in film.
Dauber draws a captivating through line that ties historical influences ranging from the
Salem witch trials and enslaved-person narratives directly to the body of work we more
closely associate with horror films today: from the disquieting movies of Alfred Hitchcock
in the 1950s, to up-all-night thrillers of Stephen King, and the gripping contemporary
critiques of Jordan Peele, Dauber makes the haunting case that horror reveals the true
depths of the American mind.
Jeremy Dauber is a professor of Jewish literature and American Studies at Columbia University,
where he has also served as director of its Institute for Israel and Jewish Studies.
He received his undergraduate degree summa cum laude from Harvard and his doctorate from
the University of Oxford, which he attended as a Rhodes Scholar. His previous books include In
the Demon's Bedroom: Yiddish Literature and the Early Modern, also Antonio's Devils: Writers
of the Jewish Enlightenment and the Birth of Modern Hebrew and Yiddish Literature, The
Worlds of Sholem Aleichem, and Jewish Comedy: A Serious History.
