Libraries in Israel: an Architectural Representation of the Zionist Movement and Israeliness
Library buildings combine relationships among the presence of written knowledge from the past, the existence of the present, and the implications for the future while enabling knowledge to be studied and shared through communication in a library's space. One can define the library's role as an educational institution that facilitates the accumulation of knowledge and information.
The evolution of libraries in Israel was made possible by incentives from Zionist movement organizations in Europe and the United State. Those organizations sought to develop the land of Israel, not only by building physical buildings and infrastructures but also by creating an intellectual perspective. Before the establishment of the state of Israel, libraries were operated in the main cities as well as in small settlements and kibbutzim (collective settlements), providing a means of communication between the Israeli settlers and events abroad. After the establishment of the state of Israel numerous public and municipal libraries were built, likewise the new building for the National Library at Givat Ram Campus.
This research posits that libraries' architecture can reflect the Zionist narrative, mirroring the perception of Israel as a nation and its dynamic development. This architectural mirroring can be tracked from the 'Yishuv' (trans. pre-state) settlements during the British Mandate, through the establishment of Israel and its period of immigrant absorption, until the subsequent rise of conflicts and criticism in the country.
The research emphasizes the relationships between architecture in Israel and the Zionist movement and explores the role of architecture in assisting in the creation of national identity and the design of national consciousness. Moreover, the research demonstrates how representations of the Zionist movement and of Israeliness are embodied in architecture, and discusses the significance of this tendency. For the purposes of this research, libraries are considered as a typology within Israeli architecture, as an ideological apparatus, and as social, cultural, and technological representations of knowledge. The research tracks the development of libraries and the representation of the Zionist ideology in their architecture from the period of the British Mandate until the 1980s, the examination beginning with early private libraries, continuing through community libraries, and concluding with the establishment of the National Library.
