Digital fabrication and automation assume greater centrality in architecture by redefining design and production processes. However, current automated tools fall short of handling raw materials and addressing high-skill manual tasks. Decoding such techniques is essential for transferring building craft to robotic fabrication. In this context, the presented research is focused on developing custom tools that enable overcoming these challenges by performing autonomous robotic craft. By doing so, we augment manual craft, introduce sensitivity to automated tools, and perform architectural fabrication with previously overlooked materials.
Tom Shaked is a Tel-Aviv University graduate (B.Arch and M.A.). He earned his Ph.D. from the Technion, focusing on developing robotic tools for adaptive fabrication in construction. He is currently a visiting lecturer and postdoctoral researcher at the School of Engineering and Design at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). His research focuses on collective robotic construction and autonomous systems in unstructured environments.
